This book by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff is the perfect read for fans of their podcast, My Favorite Murder.
As a listener for years now, I go in phases with their podcast and I found that to be the case with their book as well. While I think you could (and would) enjoy the book as someone who doesn’t listen to the podcast, Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered is a book most people are going to pick up because of their love for the podcast and the two women that host it. It isn’t not enjoyable by a non-listener, just more enjoyable by a listener.
I enjoyed Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered because of their voices (not only because I read the book to the tune of their podcast voices). Both women write very differently and I loved their stories for the same reasons why I love their podcast – they’re very themselves. They’re telling stories about past failures and lessons learned alongside stories about their childhood wins. They’re talking about things the way that they would speak to their friends or even a younger sister – candidly and though a lense of reflection.
I’m always skeptical of people writing memoirs at such a young age (thirties and forties, in this circumstance), but these two women are simply capitalizing off their (relatively) newfound fame and are being smart in the way they’re doing it. While the name of the book is derived from their signature signoff, this book isn’t full of things you already know, just from people you already know.
The easiest way I can describe this book is that it’s full of the things we hear about before they get into the cases for the episode – if you’re a skipper-until-the-murder kind of guy or gal, this book might not be for you.
It’s new and clever and I’d recommend the book if you’re a fan of the podcast. And if you’re not a fan yet of the podcast, give them a listen anywhere you can find podcasts – My Favorite Murder – and then give the book a try.
